Until March 14 in Crimea — World Glaucoma Week
World Glaucoma Week is observed from 8 to 14 March 2026. Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease associated with increased intraocular pressure, which leads to damage to the optic nerve.
As the chief freelance ophthalmologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea, Svetlana Chistyakova, said, the main insidiousness of this disease lies in its practically asymptomatic course in the early stages, when the absence of pain or obvious blurred vision prevents the patient from noticing the problem in time. The disease steals vision unnoticed, and it is no longer possible to restore what is lost.
The risk group includes people over 40–50 years of age (the likelihood of the disease increases with age), those whose close relatives suffered from glaucoma, as well as patients with myopia or diabetes.
Svetlana Chistyakova notes that the only reliable way to stop the disease in a timely manner remains regular preventive measurement of intraocular pressure, which must be carried out at least once a year, even in the absence of any complaints. Measuring intraocular pressure is carried out as part of a preventive medical examination and the first stage of medical examination.
Despite the fact that glaucoma cannot be cured completely, modern medicine can effectively control its development. The use of special medications in the form of drops and the use of laser treatment methods make it possible to stabilize blood pressure, preserve vision and provide the patient with a full life, provided that therapy is started early.
