The coming winter, according to experts, is unlikely to please us with a quiet epidemiological situation — ARVI, the old and by no means good flu and coronavirus, the activity of which has also become seasonal, will be active. Doctors expect an increase in the incidence of ARVI from the end of November, with a peak in December–January. In many regions, the weather most comfortable for viruses has established itself — cool and changeable. This means it’s time to take preventive measures and support the body’s defenses.
A vaccine is the best prevention. But only for the flu
Vaccination remains the most effective and reliable way to protect against influenza. Experts strongly advise not to delay your visit to the clinic: it takes 2-3 weeks for antibodies to develop after vaccination. If you delay, there is a risk that immunity will not have time to form and will not provide protection.
However, the flu vaccine is selective. It does not protect against viruses of non-influenza etiology, which, according to Rospotrebnadzor, dominated the morbidity structure in September, causing illness in almost a million Russians. As winter approaches, the flu will really take center stage, but other viruses will still remain active. Therefore, experts recommend the use of universal broad-spectrum antiviral drugs that can resist various pathogens.
Universal protection
Chief children’s allergist-immunologist of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Andrey Prodeus recommends using drugs with a proven mechanism of action for the prevention and treatment of viral infections. Among such drugs, in particular, he includes umifenovir, better known in Russia under the brand name Arbidol.
This substance prevents the virus from entering the cell and its further reproduction. Umifenovir is effective not only against influenza A and B viruses, but also against a number of other respiratory infections — rotaviruses, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, etc. The use of Arbidol for preventive purposes reduces the risk of infection, and therapeutic use helps alleviate symptoms, shorten the duration of the disease and reduce the risk of complications, Professor Prodeus explained to the publication https://news.rambler.ru.
The expert emphasizes that such drugs are especially important in the treatment and prevention of children, since their immune system is more vulnerable.
If there are appropriate indications, it is advisable to supplement antiviral therapy with symptomatic drugs — for cough, sore throat, runny nose and other manifestations. At the same time, doctors strongly remind: any treatment must be coordinated with a specialist!
