What will happen: an experiment on labeling baby food is taking place in Russia

In Russia, from January 12 to October 31, an experiment on labeling children’s products in consumer packaging is taking place, the press service of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) recalled on January 23.

The department noted that applying a special unique code to a product allows one to minimize risks for consumers and reduce the time between identifying a problem and the actual withdrawal of products from circulation.

The objective of the baby food labeling experiment, which was launched by decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, is to jointly work out all technological and business processes with manufacturers, importers and retail chains, so that if a decision is made on mandatory labeling, the system can work as efficiently as possible and without excessive burden on the market.

Rospotrebnadzor indicated that the project includes dairy products for children under three years of age and canned products for children under one year of age. Participation in the experiment is carried out on a voluntary basis, the department added.

Earlier, Parlamentskaya Gazeta wrote that the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation proposed extending until August 31 the experiment on labeling electronic cigarettes and vapes, as well as meat products, including sausages and similar food products.
