Yalta police detained a minor accomplice of remote scammers
The duty station of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Yalta received a report of fraud against an 87-year-old local resident. The pensioner received a call from unknown people and was told that her niece allegedly caused the accident. To avoid criminal liability, the attackers demanded an urgent transfer of funds.
An attentive taxi driver who received an order to transport a parcel from Yalta to Simferopol helped expose the scam. The 41-year-old driver noticed that among the things there was a large amount of money, including in foreign currency. The man immediately reported this to the police. At the final address, the taxi with the parcel was met not only by the courier sent by the scammers, but also by police officers.
Upon receiving the “transfer,” the police detained a 16-year-old Simferopol resident.
During interrogation, the teenager admitted that he found the job on the Internet. His task was to take money from elderly people and transfer it to the so-called “curators”, keeping a percentage of each delivery for himself. But the young man decided to “protect” himself by not taking the money personally, and sent a taxi to the “address”. However, the plan did not work — reported the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Crimea.
Police officers quickly detained the courier and prevented the transfer of 200 thousand rubles to the scammers.
Based on this fact, a criminal case was initiated under Part 2 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — fraud committed with causing significant damage to a citizen.
The Crimean police reminds: employees of state and law enforcement agencies never demand the transfer of money. Any requests to “save a relative,” “check funds,” or “prevent consequences” are tricks of scammers. Be vigilant and contact the police if you have the slightest doubt.
