127 seconds instead of the planned 84. Roskosmos named the cause of the crash of the apparatus «Luna-25»

The engine of the interplanetary station «Luna-25» during the correction of the orbit worked for 127 seconds instead of the planned 84. This was the main cause of the accident of the device, said in an interview with the TV channel «Russia 24» Director General of Roscosmos Yury Borisov.

At 2:10 p.m. on August 19, the engines were turned on, which were supposed to correct and put the device into pre-landing orbit. Unfortunately, the engine shutdown did not occur normally, in accordance with the cyclogram, but according to a time cutoff, and instead of the planned 84 seconds, it worked for 127 seconds. This was the main cause of the failure of the device.Borisov said.

According to the head of Roskosmos, before being loaded on board the spacecraft, the flight task for orbit correction was repeatedly simulated on a ground stand.

The whole experiment was carried out in the zone of stable radio communication, we knew everything about the position of the ship. Nevertheless, at 2:57 pm, communication with the spacecraft ceased, and attempts to restore communication were unsuccessful. Preliminary ballistic calculations showed that due to the abnormal operation of the corrective propulsion system, the device switched to an open lunar orbit and, in fact, crashed into the surface of the Moon— said the head of Roscosmos.

The emergency commission, which will investigate the causes of the crash of the Luna-25 mission, has already been formed and has begun work. The preliminary reason is named (127 seconds of engine operation). What led to the abnormal operation of the engine — experts understand. According to the head of Roscosmos, the necessary results will be obtained in the near future, which will be taken into account in the implementation of the next missions.
