A car thief was detained in Sevastopol

In Sevastopol, operatives detained a visiting man suspected of stealing a local resident’s car.
The perpetrator turned out to be a 39-year-old resident of the Krasnodar region who had been previously convicted several times, including for theft, and who unlawfully took possession of someone else’s car.
It was established that a 23-year-old local resident decided to stop at a store on his way home. He parked his VAZ-21140 car nearby, but did not turn off the engine or lock the vehicle, but simply ran out to do some shopping, leaving the key in the ignition. A Krasnodar resident passing by noticed an open car without a driver and decided to take a ride in it because he did not want to get home by public transport. While in the store, the victim saw an unknown man driving away in his car, tried to catch up, but could not, and turned to the police for help.— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol.
As a result of the search, traffic police officers found a stolen car near one of the residential buildings, seized it and returned it to its owner.
During further operational-search activities, the criminal investigation department of the Russian Department of Internal Affairs in the Leninsky District detained the attacker. The investigation department opened a criminal case against him under Part 1 of Art. 166 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Wrongful seizure of a car without the purpose of theft”). The sanction of the article provides for up to 5 years of imprisonment. The defendant was taken into custody.
