A digital map of sunken ships of the Black Sea is being created in Sevastopol

CrimeaPRESS reports:

To date, the interactive map contains nine objects: four Russian submarines sunk during the Civil War, as well as five ships, including an English brig that sank in the mid-19th century. Since 2021, scientists from Sevastopol State University have been engaged in underwater research in the Black and Azov Seas under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society: searching for sunken ships, creating their three-dimensional models and placing them on a public interactive map.

Before the implementation of this project, there was no single digital atlas containing underwater objects of the Azov-Black Sea basin, linked to the geographical coordinates of the places of destruction of objects and containing information and reference materials and their three-dimensional images— said «Sevastopol newspaper» Head of the Center for Historical and Archaeological Research of Crimea and the Mediterranean of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Lebedinsky.

At a scientific conference, which took place at the end of March on the territory of the Konstantinovskaya Battery museum and exhibition complex, scientists discussed comprehensive studies of underwater historical objects and the results and tasks of the expedition for the 2023-2024 season.

A team of diver researchers conducted underwater surveys using robotic systems. The data collected during the dives made it possible to create digital models of the unique objects discovered for demonstration in 3D format on the created Internet resource. According to V. Lebedinsky, scientists used modern IT technologies: photogrammetry, 3D positioning and others.

Based on the results of the latest expedition, the researchers proposed to map new objects: the tugboat SP-12, the battleship Svobodnaya Rossiya, the trawler Odessa City Council, the cargo scow Gorgypia, and the sailing ship Agnes Blaikie.

Sevastopol researchers believe that as it develops and fills out, the interactive underwater map will become a real virtual museum of underwater cultural and historical sites of the Black and Azov Seas, as well as a convenient tool for historians and researchers, teachers and students, professional divers and diving enthusiasts.

You can study models of sunken ships, see underwater footage and read historical information on the website podkarta.rgo.ru.
