A doula (birth companion) answered in court for the death of a newborn in the Leninsky district of Crimea

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The evidence collected by the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol was recognized by the court as sufficient to convict the 38-year-old resident of Sevastopol. She was found guilty of carrying out medical practice by a person who does not have a license for this type of activity, which resulted in the death of a person through negligence (Part 2 of Article 235 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

The investigative department for the Leninsky district and the court found that a pregnant resident of the village of Lenino decided to organize her birth at home, refusing qualified medical assistance and hospitalization in a medical institution, knowing for sure about her contraindications. On an advertisement website, she met a native of St. Petersburg, who, without a license, carried out a private medical practice under the guise of a foreign profession as a doula, not registered in the Russian Federation. The companion valued her obstetric services at 35 thousand rubles.

During pregnancy, the doula held meetings with a resident of the village of Lenino in rented halls in Simferopol and Sevastopol, where she performed medical examinations and prescribed dietary supplements,” the Investigative Committee provided details.

On the afternoon of February 2 of this year, during a delivery at the place of residence of a pregnant woman, the companion discovered that the fetus had special features and assured the patient about the positive experience of such childbirth. As a result of the lack of prompt qualified medical care, the newborn boy died.

The investigation has established all the circumstances of the tragedy.

The court sentenced the companion to a suspended sentence of 2.5 years in prison with a probationary period of 2 years.

We would like to remind you that in May the mother of the deceased child, a 31-year-old resident of the Leninsky district, was sentenced. The court found her guilty of causing death by negligence and was sentenced to 1.5 years of restriction of freedom.
