A telephone scam messenger who stole 3.6 million rubles from a pensioner was detained in Sevastopol

CrimeaPRESS reports:

A 76-year-old local resident contacted the Sevastopol police and reported that she had become a victim of the fraudulent scheme “Your relative caused an accident.”

The pensioner said that in the afternoon an unknown woman called her, introduced herself as a medical worker and said that her daughter was the culprit of a road accident in which a teenager was seriously injured, and she needed money for an urgent operation. Later, she received a call from unknown men who identified themselves as law enforcement officers and also demanded large sums in order not to bring the relative to justice.

At the direction of the telephone scammers, the victim three times handed over bundles of money, including foreign currency, to the arriving courier. The amount of damage caused amounted to 3.6 million rubles.

As a result of operational-search activities, employees of the criminal investigation department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol, with the force support of the special unit SOBR “Sokol” of the Russian Guard, detained the messenger of the swindlers. He turned out to be a 39-year-old newcomer who had previously been repeatedly convicted of theft and illegal drug transactions. The man said that three years ago he came to Sevastopol for the purpose of employment, and since the income of a handyman did not suit him, he found additional income as a courier for scammers. According to the detainee, during three visits to the pensioner, he transferred all the stolen money to anonymous curators, for which he received about 150 thousand rubles.

An investigator from the investigative department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Gagarinsky district opened a criminal case against the attacker under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Fraud”, he faces up to ten years in prison. During the investigation, a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen for the defendant.
