A unique antique mausoleum was found in the southern suburbs of Chersonese
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Specialists of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IIMK RAS) discovered an unparalleled stone building of ancient times during the largest excavations in Russia. A sensational discovery was made in the southern suburbs of Tauric Chersonese.
This object is a unique combination of funeral and public buildings. The upper part was an exedra — a gazebo, usually installed on the important streets of the city. The lower part is a mausoleum, or a four-chamber crypt, two of which contain sarcophagi. This combination of funeral and public buildings is unique and has no analogues in the world. At the moment, the discovered exedra has been dismantled, work will be carried out to restore it. Now researchers are actively studying the lower, funerary, part of the structure in order to conserve this archaeological complex in the future and, along with others, subsequently collect on the new site of the Tauric Chersonesos historical and archaeological park, — quotes the press service of the researcher of the Department of Conservation Archeology of the IIMK RAS, candidate of historical sciences, head of the complex expedition in the southern suburbs of Chersonese Sergey Solovyov.
Recall that since April 2021, IIMK RAS, with the support of the My History Foundation and the Russian Ministry of Defense, has been conducting large-scale archaeological research within the planned historical and archaeological park Tauric Chersonesos. During this time, an area of about 85 thousand square meters was studied, more than 500 archaeological complexes and about 4 million finds.
