A unique operation in Crimea: doctors replaced a pacemaker for a patient aged one hundred years

CrimeaPRESS reports:

In Crimea, specialists from the department of surgical treatment of complex cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac pacing of the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea “Republican Clinical Hospital named after. N.A. Semashko» replaced the pacemaker for a patient aged 100 years.

As Anatoly Tsybrik, head of the department of surgical treatment of complex cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac pacing, said, all patients who are implanted with a pacemaker must regularly come to the medical facility to check the device.

The patient was given her first pacemaker in 2013 due to heart block. During one of the routine checks, we saw that the patient’s cardiac arrhythmia became worse, the stimulator began to work more often, and the battery charge began to drop sharply. Battery discharge could occur at home, which would lead to a critical condition of the patient and the need for emergency care. To play it safe, we decided to hospitalize the patient. Next, we conducted a full examination of the patient — her test results turned out to be excellent for such an advanced age. Of course, the relatives were worried about how the grandmother would undergo the operation, but our operating team is ready for the fact that all patients are complex and it is necessary to carefully check all the points in order to perform the intervention without complications. The operation, which lasted about 40 minutes, was performed under local anesthesia and sedation; the previous device was replaced with a modern model. After the operation, the patient’s condition has noticeably improved, the grandmother is already preparing for dischargesaid Anatoly Tsybrik.

All treatment is carried out in accordance with modern clinical recommendations and standards.

The department also implants a cardioveterar defibrillator and resynchronization devices for heart failure and life-threatening tachyarrhythmias. We plan to begin diagnosing complex rhythm disturbances using endocardial electrophysiological examination of the heart and treating tachyarrhythmias using radiofrequency ablation,” summarized Anatoly Tsybrik.
