A unique operation was performed at the Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary
CrimeaPRESS reports:
At the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea “Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary named after V.M. Efetova» performed a unique operation — metastasectomy and isolated hyperthermic chemoperfusion of the lungs. This is a method in which all tumor foci are removed from the lung affected by metastases, after which the organ is exposed to a high dose of aggressive chemotherapy.
As explained by the acting Deputy Chief Physician of the KROKD named after. Efetova Alexander Babich, during the procedure, the lung affected by the tumor is disconnected from the systemic blood flow and switched to the artificial circulation machine. Next, the tumor is surgically removed, and the site of metastasis is “washed” with a large dose of an antitumor drug. After the completion of the chemoperfusion session, the lung is “cleansed” of the chemotherapy drug and is included in the systemic circulation. This eliminates the possibility of systemic toxic effects, as with traditional chemotherapy, — noted in the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea.
In Russia, chemoperfusion of the lungs and metastasectomy are performed in a single center — the Federal State Budgetary Institution «National Medical Research Center of Oncology named after. N.N. Petrov» of the Russian Ministry of Health. This technology, unique not only for Crimea, but also for Russia, is available today for patients applying to the Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary named after V.M. Efetova. The first patient for whom Crimean doctors performed this intervention feels well and is preparing for discharge.
