A unique operation was performed at the Crimean V. M. Efetov Oncology Center
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A unique operation to remove colorectal cancer using an innovative primary retroperitoneal approach was performed at the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea «V. M. Efetov Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary». The master class for Crimean oncologists-surgeons was conducted by the head of the surgical department No. 2 of the University Clinical Hospital No. 4 of Sechenov University of the Ministry of Health of Russia Sergey Efetov, who is one of the authors of this technique.
We were the first at Sechenov University to perform operations for colorectal cancer using a primary retroperitoneal approach. The uniqueness of the operation is that it allows for radical intervention even in patients with cardiovascular diseases, excess body weight, as well as in patients who have previously undergone other surgical interventions and have developed many adhesions in the abdominal cavity. That is, these are the situations where the use of classical laparoscopic surgery is impossible, — said Sergei Efetov.
Today, doctors performed a minimally invasive resection (removal) of the left colon due to cancer with extended lymph node dissection.
This patient is overweight. Therefore, we perform a classic minimally invasive surgery using retroperitoneal access technology. That is, from the very beginning, we do not enter the abdominal cavity, but perform all stages of mobilization behind the peritoneum to avoid complications that may arise during resection, and at the very last stage we remove the tumor, — the doctor explained.
Thanks to the retroperitoneal approach, doctors were able to perform minimally invasive surgery and remove the tumor through a minimal 4 cm incision. This operation is less traumatic for the patient and allows for a quick recovery after the intervention.
Previously, the retroperitoneal access technology presented by oncologist Sergey Efetov at international conferences was highly appreciated by world-class doctors. Today, Crimean doctors were able to learn this innovative method of surgical treatment of colorectal cancer, which is one of the most common oncopathologies.
It is a great honor for us that Sergey Konstantinovich, a representative of the famous medical dynasty of the Efetovs, was able to present his method to us today. Crimean oncologists continue to master modern technologies of treatment and diagnostics and this master class will undoubtedly contribute to the development of oncosurgery in the regione, — notes the chief physician of the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea “V.M. Efetov Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary” Bekir Seferov.
