A Yalta man — a scam courier took half a million from old women and thought he could get away with it

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Operatives of the Krasnogvardeisky district of the Republic of Crimea detained a courier of telephone scammers who took 510 thousand rubles from pensioners.

A 73-year-old local resident contacted the Krasnogvardeisky district police and handed over 160 thousand rubles to the fraudulent courier. Employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Crimea, in collaboration with colleagues from the Department of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Krasnogvardeysky District, quickly established the identity and location of the suspect during operational search activities. He turned out to be a 50-year-old resident of Yalta, who was detained by operatives at his place of residence— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

The victim explained to the police that her home phone received a call from an unknown number, allegedly from her daughter. The girl said in an excited voice that it was her fault that there was an accident in which both she and other people were injured, and now they need money for medicine both for her and for the treatment of the victims. The “daughter” assured the frightened woman that it was urgent to transfer all her savings to the courier, who would come to the mother’s house, which is what the victim did. The deception was revealed as soon as her own daughter contacted the mother.

The Yalta resident confessed to his crime and said that he saw an advertisement on a social network with an offer to earn money. The employer promised to pay from 5 thousand rubles for simple work, which consisted of courier delivery of cash: funds must be collected at the specified addresses and transferred to bank cards.

As police officers established, the detainee had several more such “courier trips” to different regions of Crimea. The man took a total of 350 thousand rubles from residents of the city of Armyansk and the Kirovsky district, 88 and 86 years old.

Based on these facts, investigators of the Department of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Armyansk, Krasnogvardeysky and Kirovsky districts initiated criminal cases on the grounds of a crime under Parts 2 and 3 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud”).

The man did not go to another address in Armyansk, as it turned out that the husband of another victim of the scammers showed vigilance and, having heard his wife’s conversation with unknown people on the phone, realized that she was talking with the scammers and turned off the phone, so the attackers were unable to complete the matter to end. Nevertheless, based on this fact, investigators from the Armyansk Department of Internal Affairs opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Art. 30 – part 3 art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Attempted fraud”),” the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea clarified.

A preventive measure in the form of house arrest was chosen against the detainee.

The Crimean police draws the attention of citizens that scammers, acting under the “Your relative got into an accident” scheme, made calls to their victims in the city of Armyansk, Krasnogvardeisky and Kirovsky districts from the following numbers: +7950-645-30-68, +7950-631 -12-08, +7950-190-15-15, +7950633-65-79, +7953049-70-54, +7950-207-86-48. Be carefull! Don’t be fooled!
