About the benefits of surveillance cameras. Young car thieves detained in Sevastopol

CrimeaPRESS reports:

So small, but already ugly.

In Sevastopol, police detained four suspects in an attempt to steal a car. The moment the crime was committed was recorded by a video surveillance camera installed next to the parked vehicle.

A 55-year-old music school watchman, while on night duty, parked his VAZ-2107 near an educational institution within the coverage area of an external video surveillance camera. The vehicle was noticed by a group of young people who were driving past a Zhiguli car, and, having previously agreed, they decided to steal the vehicle. The thieves discovered that the driver’s door of the car was not closed, examined the interior and tried to start the engine. At that moment, the VAZ owner noticed a group of strangers near his car and hurried to the parking lot. When the man ran out into the street, one of the attackers hit him, knocking him down, and then the whole company disappeared— said the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol.

As a result of operational search activities, employees of the criminal investigation department of the Severnoye police department identified the suspects and detained them. The would-be hijackers turned out to be four local residents, including one teenager aged 16. Two of the suspects already had convictions for violating traffic rules and theft.

A criminal case has been initiated against the detainees under Part 3 of Art. 30 clause “a” part 2 art. 166 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Wrongful seizure of a car or other vehicle without the purpose of theft”). The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of up to seven years.
