About the heroes of the old days: Claudia Shmatko — Evpatoria introduces those who defended the world into the Great Patriotic War

This year, Russia celebrates a significant date-the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
In honor of this memorable date, we want to tell about those who destroyed fascism and gave planet peace-say in the press service of the administration of Yevpatoria. — And the first hero of our publications was Claudia Vasilievna Shmatko.
Born on February 1, 1927 in Gelendzhik. When the war began, the girl graduated from six classes. School buildings were given to the hospitals, and the children had to study in three shifts. In 1942, the Germans were very bombing and were already approaching Novorossiysk, so it was decided to evacuate children from 10 to 16 years old through Tuapse. The guys, along with their accompanying, had to walk about 160 kilometers on foot, but along the way they fell under the bombing. From the death of Claudius and three other girls were saved by a friend. A few days later, the girl managed to find her mother, but their house was destroyed, and a grandmother died under his debris. Together with her mother, Claudius was hiding in the gorge near Gelendzhik, where all the inhabitants of the city were hidden. Later she left for her uncle, in 1943 she returned home when the Soviet troops went on the offensive. Then the girl turned 16 years old, and she decided to join the army. Together with the other guys, Claudius forged the documents, adding herself a couple of years to adulthood, and went to the front. Claudia served as a radio operator on the battery, participated in the liberation of the Caucasus, Crimea, Ukraine, Romania, Czechoslovakia, where she met the victory.
She was awarded the medal «For the Defense of the Caucasus» and the medal «For the victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.»
