In general, she played more than 30 roles in various genres of films, including comedies, dramas, thrillers, action films and crime films.
Salma — the beginning
Salma Hayek was born in the small Mexican city of Coatzacoalcos, located on the Gulf Coast. Her family, wealthy and wealthy, included her mother, the popular Spanish opera singer Diana Jimenez Medina, and her father, Sami Hayek Dominguez, who was from Lebanon and worked as an executive for an oil company. My father even once ran for mayor of Coatzacoalcos. In 1975, Salma’s younger brother, Sami Hayek, was born.
Salma inherited a love of art from her mother and often went to the cinema with her father, where she began to dream of more than just life in a small town. At the age of nine, she was invited to the national gymnastics team, but her father was against her leaving for the capital, and she stayed at home.
Her parents were devout Catholics, and at age 12 they sent her to an all-girls Catholic boarding school in Louisiana. Although she was a good student, she had difficulty reading and writing and was diagnosed with dyslexia. Her strong personality sometimes led to conflicts with the nuns who ran the school, and she soon returned to Mexico, graduating early.
After a short stay at a high school in Houston, where she studied with her aunt, Salma returned to Mexico. She studied English and immersed herself in American culture before attending the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, where she studied international relations. But she soon realized that her real passion was acting, after which she began studying at an acting studio. Her father, although he doubted her talent, still supported her desire to become an actress. In 1991, she went to Los Angeles to study acting.
Salma Hayek’s career — from Mexico to Hollywood
Mexico
Salma Hayek was noticed by a Mexican producer when she performed in the play «Aladdin» in a children’s theater, and he offered her a cameo role in the series. In 1994, Hayek was invited to play in the film “Walk of Miracles.” This film, thanks to its stellar cast, became very popular in Mexico and received many awards, and Salma herself was nominated for the Ariel Award, Mexico’s main film award.
Not satisfied with success in her homeland, she went to the United States in search of world fame. The first years in the States were not easy: Hayek faced discrimination and had to earn a living by participating in television series while learning English. She also studied with Stella Adler in Los Angeles.
In 1993, she starred in the film My Crazy Life, which, although not a great success, attracted the attention of film critics. That same year, she received several invitations to film. Returning to Mexico to film Fallen Love (1995), she continued to collect awards at international film festivals.

The company’s first film was an adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s novel Nobody Writes to the Colonel (1999), which was nominated by Mexico for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category. Hayek also played one of the roles in this film.
The film Frida (2002) was especially important for Hayek. She had long dreamed of playing the role of the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and eventually became the producer of this film. For this role, Hayek was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress, and the film received two Academy Awards.
Hayek also made her directorial debut. In 2003, Maldonado’s Miracle was released, for which she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Children’s, Youth or Family Program.
