Almost like in the movies (only in life everything is scarier): how the hijacker was neutralized in Simferopol

In Simferopol, police blocked a car with a drunken car thief, who almost ran over children walking along a pedestrian crossing.

Police department No. 2 “Kyiv” received a report from a 28-year-old resident of the Bakhchisaray district regarding the theft of his car. The man said he left the vehicle briefly, leaving the keys in the ignition. Turning around, he saw an unknown person driving away in his car. The owner was unable to stop the hijacker on his own.

Employees of the police patrol service and the State Traffic Inspectorate of Simferopol, as a result of operational search activities, quickly identified a stolen car on one of the streets of the capital of the Republic. The driver of the pursued car did not respond to repeated demands from police officers to stop, and therefore the police decided to block the vehicle— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

When the police approached the car, the driver locked the doors, put the vehicle in reverse and tried to escape. He started moving towards a public transport stop, where at that moment there were people, including children returning from school.

The police officers, without hesitation, decided to break the driver’s door glass to stop the car.

At the moment of the glass breaking, one of the employees of the Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Simferopol, police lieutenant Roman Golida, received an injury to his hand, namely a cut of the tendon. The suspect was detained; he turned out to be a 37-year-old local resident. He confessed to what he had done. According to the results of a medical examination, the attacker was in a state of drug intoxication, the police said.

The investigator of the police department No. 2 “Kyiv” initiated criminal cases against the suspect on the grounds of a crime under Part 1 of Art. 166 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Wrongful possession of a car), Part 1 of Art. 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Driving a vehicle while intoxicated by a person subject to administrative punishment or having a criminal record). The man faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.

Currently, the suspect has been given a preventive measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave the place, and the car has been given under safekeeping to the rightful owner. Thanks to the professionalism and brave actions of the police, it was possible to avoid a tragedy and prevent casualtiesnoted the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

A police officer who was injured while detaining an intruder was provided with medical assistance. He is currently undergoing treatment.
