An event dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the start of the defense of Sevastopol took place on Malakhov Kurgan

In Sevastopol, at the Malakhov Kurgan memorial complex, a historical and patriotic event “Admiral V. A. Kornilov — eternal memory and glory” was held, dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the start of the first defense of Sevastopol and the mortal wound and death of Vice Admiral Vladimir Alekseevich Kornilov. He carefully prepared Sevastopol for a long and difficult defense, as a result, in a short period of time, fortifications were created on the Ship and South sides of the city, which played a vital role in repelling attacks by the Anglo-French and Turkish troops during the Crimean War.

We gathered on the day of blessed memory of Vladimir Alekseevich Kornilov — the man who actually led the heroic defense of Sevastopol and gave his life in this holy place on Malakhov Kurgan for our city, for the Black Sea Fleet, for the great Fatherland, Russia. Malakhov Kurgan is a place that remembers the heroes of the first defense of Sevastopol. The spirit of this place is precisely the spirit of our Hero City. Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol on Health, Social Policy and Family Support, Alexander Kulagin, emphasized that Sevastopol is a city of special fortitude, and this fortitude was nurtured by human example, by example of the courage and perseverance of our defenders at all times.

When the first defense of Sevastopol took place, our great admirals made very difficult decisions for themselves. Especially the decision that was related to the sinking of ships was difficult for them. And this special fortitude is characteristic of the people of Sevastopol. It is passed down from generation to generation thanks to this kind of interaction, thanks to the fact that Sevastopol has always strived to know its historynotes Alexander Kulagin.

On October 17, 1854, the enemy launched the first bombardment of Sevastopol. In the afternoon, Vladimir Kornilov arrived at Malakhov Kurgan, where he was mortally wounded.

Today we remember the main words that he said before he passed away: “Defend Sevastopol.” And after so many years, today, our soldiers, defending Russian lands, relying on these great, strong, very powerful words, go forward and successfully advance on the battlefields. As a sign of respect, eternal memory and glory, the event participants laid flowers at the site of the mortal wound of the outstanding naval commander, leader and hero of the defense of Sevastopol, Vladimir Alekseevich Kornilov.
