An exhibition of ancient costumes “Fashion of Medieval Soldaya” opened in Old Crimea
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Since November 17, the Museum of History and Archeology of Old Crimea has been hosting the exhibition “Fashion of Medieval Soldaya”. Visitors will see unique exhibits of the Sudak Fortress Museum-Reserve. These are sketches of the costumes of the Byzantines, Cumans and Italians, as well as a collection of jewelry created almost 10 centuries ago.
An unusual exhibition created by the staff of the Sudak Fortress Museum-Reserve will introduce visitors to a little-studied page of history — the development of fashion trends in the clothing of medieval townspeople who lived in Soldaya, the Genoese fortress of Sudak. You will see ascetic clothing of the early Middle Ages, women’s and men’s costumes in the form of tunic dresses in the Romanesque style, Italian fashion of the Renaissance with brocade, velvet and silk outfits. Gothic models will show breakthrough trends — the separation of women’s skirt and bodice, as well as options for men’s suits — loose, long, narrow and short— reports Tourist portal of Crimea.
The exhibition also includes sketches of costumes of the Byzantines, Cumans and Kievan Rus of the 12th century, clothing of the Golden Horde, Armenians of the 13th century, Italian costumes of the 12th-15th centuries, as well as unique items from the stock collection of the Sudak Fortress museum-reserve: medieval paste and glass beads, bronze earrings, silver, copper and bronze rings of the 12th century, glass, bronze bracelets of the 10th-14th centuries, cork soles for shoes, wooden combs of the 12th-15th centuries and foundry molds for buttons.
An illustration of medieval Italian fashion will be the stylization of the men’s suit of the Genoese consul and the dress of a wealthy Italian woman. The exhibition will run until January 31, 2024. Address: Old Crimea, st. P. Osipenko, 74, Museum of History and Archeology.
