An innovative method for the treatment of certain types of oncology has been introduced in Crimea — isolated chemoperfusion
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In the Republic of Crimea, for the first time, an innovative method for the treatment of oncological diseases has been introduced — isolated chemoperfusion. Chemoperfusion is a type of chemotherapy used to treat some rare types of cancer.
A joint team of doctors of the Crimean Republican Oncological Clinical Dispensary named after V.M. Efetov and the Republican Clinical Hospital. ON THE. Semashko successfully performed three operations: in a patient with sarcoma of the lower extremity and two patients with uveal melanoma with liver metastases— quotes the press service of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Crimea Konstantin Skorupsky.
A few years ago, the only way to help such patients was palliative drug therapy, but today in Russia, on the basis of some federal centers (now in the Crimean Oncology Center), isolated chemoperfusion is performed. This is an extremely complex surgical intervention that requires a highly trained team of specialists, the availability of specialized equipment, in particular, a heart-lung machine. During the operation, the affected organ is surgically disconnected from the main blood circulation and connected to the heart-lung machine, after which the highest possible dose of the chemotherapy drug is created in it, many times higher than the usual dose when it is administered intravenously. After the completion of the chemoperfusion session, the organ is “washed” of the chemotherapy drug and surgically re-introduced back into the natural bloodstream. As a result of exposure to the affected organ, the maximum effect of the destruction of tumor cells is achieved with minimal toxic effects on the body as a whole, as is the case with traditional chemotherapy.
Now a new type of high-tech medical care has become available to Crimean cancer patients. Crimean doctors continue to master and implement innovative methods of treatment— notes Konstantin Skorupsky.
