An interactive event dedicated to ancient units of measurement was held in Tauride Chersonesos

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The museum-reserve held an educational interactive for 6th grade students of the Ecotech+ school. At the exhibition “Measure Seven Times. Measure is most important,” the children were told about the history of the emergence of units of measurement and what standards of length were used by the Hellenes and Chersonesites.

The new exhibition was also inspected by honored guests, including the director of the Sevastopol Children’s Art School Maria Kostevich, the scientific secretary of the Museum-Reserve of the Heroic Defense and Liberation of Sevastopol Olga Bogachenko, the deputy director of the State Regional Center for Standardization, Metrology and Testing in Sevastopol Elena Chalaya, the head of the branch of the Central Military Maritime Museum named after Emperor Peter the Great (Museum of the Black Sea Fleet) Vladimir Klyuev, scientific secretary of the Russian Art Gallery Victoria Danilyuk and others. Many of them said warm words to Chersonese Tauride and thanked the organizers for the invitation to the exhibition.

After the end of the ceremony, an interactive lesson began for the children from the Ecotech+ school. The young guests determined their height in the Greek number system, and then, using an unusual measuring tape, measured the width of the main street of Chersonesos in fingers, feet or elbows. Authentic finds from the excavations of the ancient city and models of its buildings helped the children to visualize their appearance and size, and thanks to the interactive panel installed in the hall, the schoolchildren learned a lot of interesting things about the standards of units of quantities used in the past.

Today at the exhibition there are winners and prize-winners of mathematical Olympiads and programming competitions. These are motivated children who strive for knowledge. We were all very interested in visiting the new exhibition and taking part in such a wonderful interactive experience! Moreover, next year the children will begin to study geometry, and the knowledge gained today will help them with this. We always come to Chersonesos with pleasure! We thank the museum-reserve for cooperation in the field of education and for the invitation to such a wonderful and educational event! – Irina Butenko, a teacher of computer science and mathematics at the Ecotech+ school, shared her impressions.
