Neurosurgical surgeries in the Sevastopol City Hospital No. 5 are now carried out on a high-tech surgical navigation system with advanced equipment. It includes 3D cameras and electromagnetic sensors for tool tracking, control algorithms and data processing software.

This equipment is our pride, it is the latest operational and navigation system, of which there are only three in Crimea, but we have the most modern one. Almost all operations that can be performed on the brain in our time, we can do with the help of this equipment, having additional elements. The system is intended for operation planning, accurate volumetric calculation and 3D display of the pathological focus in the brain and its “critical” structures, the damage of which must be avoided during the operation.

We also have an expert-level operating microscope. It tells the operating surgeon the position of the focus point of the optics and displays in the eyepieces the boundaries of the pathological focus and the anatomical zones of the brain through an augmented reality module. Thus, during the operation, the surgeon controls the location of the instruments both relative to the object of the operation, and relative to the vital structures of the patient, which must be preserved. This is more than enough for our level for any surgical intervention on the brain , — says Andrey Litvin.

With the help of the system, through an extremely small operating hole, you can see the deep structures of the brain. During the operation, the equipment displays the position of the instrument on the reconstructed tomograms of the patient and changes in real time with an accuracy of less than a millimeter. The cost of the equipment is more than million rubles.

Doctors are already being trained to work with the new equipment and will soon be able to perform such surgeries on their own.

Recall that a regional project «Development of children’s health care, including the creation of a modern infrastructure for providing medical care to children» is being implemented in Sevastopol. Its goal is to reduce infant mortality, improve the provision of specialized, including high-tech, medical care to children, increase the availability and quality of medical care at all stages of its provision.
