Several local residents aged 65 to 85 contacted the duty unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Kerch and reported that they had become victims of one of the most common remote fraud schemes, “Your relative was in an accident.” In all cases, the elderly people handed over their savings to the courier.
During the operational and investigative activities, the criminal investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Kerch established that a previously unconvicted 20-year-old resident of the Krasnodar Territory was involved in the fraudulent activities. The accomplice of the remote fraudsters was detained by operatives in the city of Novorossiysk. The suspect admitted that, acting as a courier in the criminal scheme and acting on the instructions of the so-called curator, he came to the city of Kerch, where in a few hours he took the savings of four pensioners for the scammers, totaling more than 800 thousand rubles. The guy transferred the stolen money to the bank account of his accomplices, keeping part of the amount for himself as a reward, — the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Crimea reported.
The Investigative Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Kerch has opened a number of criminal cases on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud). The detainee faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.
Currently, the suspect has been remanded in custody as a preventive measure.
