Another anniversary of the liberation of Balaklava was celebrated in Sevastopol
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Today, April 18, Sevastopol celebrated the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Balaklava.
On April 18, 1944, Balaklava, the southernmost point of the Soviet-German front, was liberated from Nazi occupation. As a result, the Soviet troops proceeded to storm Sapun Mountain and further liberate Sevastopol. Solemn events dedicated to the anniversary of the liberation of Balaklava from Nazi invaders were held this morning in Balaklava. Festive events traditionally began in the morning at the monument to General P.G. Novikov, then a meeting-requiem was held at the monument «Defenders and Liberators of Balaklava».
We will always remember these heroic times. We will always remember the people who defended Balaklava, defended Sevastopol, defended our Motherland. And, of course, the most important thing is to educate the next generation on their exploits. In Balaklava, a lot of work is being done to educate the younger generation. We see how children are properly brought up here, who will know everything about the great deeds of their ancestors, and I am sure that they will tell their children about it. We are having a difficult time now, for the second year in fraternal Ukraine, a war is being waged against the brown plague, which has raised its head again. I am sure that justice will prevail, that our soldiers will be inspired by the exploits of the liberators and defenders of Sevastopol, and justice will surely prevail, — quotes the press service of the Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev.
The defense of Balaklava lasted from November 4, 1941 to June 29, 1942. In 1944, on April 15-16, Soviet troops reached the enemy’s defensive lines, and already on April 18, Balaklava was liberated as a result of the Crimean operation.
79 years ago, our Soviet troops entered Balaklava, thus opening the way to the liberation of our city of Sevastopol. And of course, we honor and remember our heroes, bow to our veterans for their heroic deed. Sevastopol celebrated the liberation a year before the complete surrender of Nazi Germany was signed, and decades later, in 2014, we were the first to restore historical justice and returned to our native harbor, returned to Russia— says Vladimir Nemtsev.
Balaklava, which fought near Sevastopol, was the southernmost point of the Soviet-German front.
On behalf of the Military Council of the Black Sea Fleet, I congratulate the Black Sea sailors on this wonderful holiday! Today is a holiday, and at the same time we remember those who died in the battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland. We will never forget them, then a lot of defenders and liberators of the city died. Only in the mass graves in Balaklava and its environs lie more than 17 thousand of our soldiers of liberators, soldiers of the separate Primorsky Army of the Black Sea Fleet, underground partisans, ”said Viktor Sokolov, commander of the Black Sea Fleet.
Congratulating all Sevastopol residents on the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Balaklava, State Duma deputy Tatyana Lobach noted the great patriotic work that Balaklava veterans are doing:
It is a tradition for us – every year on April 18 we gather. Here we lay flowers at our obelisks and our monuments. We honor our history. I am very glad to see you here today and I remember the fourteenth year. This is a symbolic place, it was here that the Balaklava people gathered and did not allow bloodshed. Dear veterans, today I want to thank you for remembering our history. You are doing a great job of patriotic education.
For reference: There are more than a hundred monuments to the heroism of Soviet soldiers in Balaklava and its environs.
