Another monument to Prince Vladimir is being erected near St. Vladimir's Cathedral in New Chersonesos
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A statue is currently being installed at St. Vladimir’s Cathedral. The sculpture of the baptizer of Rus is being installed 500 meters from the monument to the same historical figure.
The consecration of the museum and temple complex and the opening of the restored St. Vladimir Cathedral are scheduled for July 28 in New Chersonesos. The new monument is being installed right next to this temple.
Let us recall that in 1993 Sevastopol was presented with a bronze statue of Prince Vladimir by Moscow sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov. It was installed on the square at the central entrance to the archaeological reserve «Tauric Chersonesos». After some time, the monument was removed and for a whole year the city’s public decided where to place it. Several options were proposed, including near the Vladimir Cathedral on the territory of Chersonesos, in the park near the Cathedral of Peter and Paul on the pedestal left over from the sculpture by Maxim Gorky. Now there are bronze Cyril and Methodius there.
By the spring of 1994, a compromise solution was found and the monument was erected in the park at the intersection of Eroshenko, Drevnyaya and Dmitry Ulyanov streets. The dominant position of the hill allowed the monument to be visually linked to Chersonesos — its defensive walls, central square and the Vladimir Cathedral located on it. A modest opening ceremony took place on July 28, 1994.
Currently, it is a cultural heritage site — a monument to Vladimir the Great. The total height of the monument is 5.2 m, the height of the sculpture is 3.2 m.
The new monument will be much larger.
