On April 10 (March 28, according to the old style of the calendar), the Orthodox churches celebrate the day of the memory of St. Hilarion, who served the rector of the Pelicitan monastery. He was called Hilarion with a new one, in order to distinguish from Hilarion Dalmatian, who lived in the same period.
From a young age, Hilarion revered the Lord and wanted to lead a monastic life. Having become a monk, he shut up: he prayed to God, took a vow of silence, observed posts, refrained from carnal passions, and provided good deeds in need. For the benevolence and approximate obedience among the rest of the monks, he was dedicated to the presbyter, and then he was appointed abbot (rector) of the Pelikitsky monastery, located near the Dardanella Strait.
The Lord awarded Hilarion with wisdom and gift to work miracles. The saint could cure the seriously ill -ill prayer, restore vision to the blind or expel from the body of demons. He also became famous for raining, when the crop disappeared from the drought, helped to fill the catch of fishing nets, drove insects and mice from the fields in the hungry years. During his life, Hilarion wrote works that instruct Christian to be a moral life.
Once on Thursday, warriors burst into the monastery, led by the iconobostor Lahanodorcon. They godlessly interrupted the walking service, arranged a defeat, and the monks, who were in the monastery, betrayed terrible torture and bullying. 42 monks were chained and sent to a dungeon, where they were betrayed by martyrdom. Abbrections were accomplished over the remaining monks: they were beaten, doused with resin and burned with their face with fire, and some noses were cut out. The monastery itself set fire.
It is believed that Hilarion was among the monks allotted to the prison. The exact dates are unknown, but there are two versions when Hilarion became a victim of iconoclasts. Some argue that this happened under the emperor Lev Armenian — a fight against admirers of icons at the end of the 8th century. Others believe that torment took place during the rule of the emperor Leo III Isaur, at the beginning of the 9th century.
