St. John lived presumably in the second half of the VI century. At 16, he came to the Sinai monastery and became a student of Martiria. Four years later, he took monastic tonsure. At 75, John became the hegumen of the Sinai Monastery. Once the rector of the Raif Monastery asked him to write a guide to ascend to the spiritual peaks. So the great work of John appeared — “ladder”, which in the Old Slavonic means “staircase”. Four years later, as hegumen, the saint died peacefully.
