April 12 is the day of John Climacus. And the brownie is angry

CrimeaPRESS reports:

12th of April people were afraid to go out into the yard, because according to legend, on this day the brownie goes berserk. He does not recognize the owners of the house and can destroy the entire hut. It was believed that the brownie was angry because his old skin was coming off and he was in great pain. Some old people said that the reason for this behavior of the house spirit was that he wanted to marry a witch.

The brownie raged until the first rooster crowed, so the livestock was locked up at sunset. The peasants were afraid to even approach the window and were impatiently waiting for dawn. On other days, the brownie was not afraid, but was revered as a member of the family, because he always helped good people. He did not like lazy people, but he always pleased the hardworking with his kindness. This spring month is considered the most unpredictable, as the weather can bring surprises.

It may suddenly snow or suddenly become very hot, like in the summer. Folk signs of April are associated with the future harvest and the weather in the coming days.

Signs and traditions of the day:

  • It is a bad sign if early dandelions appeared on John Climacus. Signs promised a short summer and early cold in the fall.
  • A damp and rainy April foreshadowed a mushroom summer.
  • If the first rumbles of thunder with gusty winds fell on April 12, spring will be cold; and if thunder was heard, but the winds came warm, it meant a fine spring and a large number of insects.
  • People noticed: from this date maple buds begin to burst.
  • Have the bees already flown out of the hives? Toward a warm spring.
  • Today we watched wild geese: flying high means heavy rainfall in spring and summer, and vice versa.
  • If the birds continue to build nests in the shade, the summer will be hot; on the south side — to a cold summer.

Date of veneration of the memory of the holy hegumen John Climacus, Sinai

Saint John probably lived in the second half of the 6th century. At the age of 16 he came to the Sinai monastery and became a student of Martyrius. Four years later he took monastic vows. During the ceremony, one of those present, the monk Stratigios, predicted that the young monk would become a great lamp of the Christian Church.

For 19 years, John lived in a monastery next to his teacher and spiritual leader Martyrius. When he died, the monk went to the Flu desert and became a hermit. Forty years of his life passed there, which John led in prayer, silence and fasting.

At the age of 75, John became abbot of the Sinai monastery. One day, the abbot of the Raifa monastery asked him to write a guide for climbing to spiritual heights. This is how John’s great work appeared — “Ladder”, which means “ladder” in Old Church Slavonic. After four years as abbot, the saint died peacefully.
