April 15 — St. Titus Day, also «Wars Day»
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Why no bread? Because all grain reserves were running out. Also on this day, the sowing seeds were checked and the fields were cleaned. In addition, we monitored ice drift on the rivers: if the ice floes are sinking, then the year will be difficult.
There was also an interesting custom on April 15: they chased away the crows that appeared near the house. It was believed that if this bird “crawled,” then poverty, lack of food, and need could not be avoided.
Even the current 24 hours were popularly called “profit day.” The merchants believed that if they had fun, they would be successful and rich.
Who is Saint Titus, you ask? Reverend elder who lived in the ninth century AD. Very, very little is known about him. But they say that he earned universal love and reverence among the monastic brethren thanks to his meek disposition and righteous life.
Regarding nature and weather:
- A lot of water spilled — to good haymaking and a rich harvest.
- A wedge of cranes stretches to the south on April 15 — the year will be lean and unsuccessful.
- Ice melts and sinks on lakes — a bad harvest.
- Crows frolic high in the sky — for clear and sunny weather.
- Spring waters flow slowly — leading to crop failure. Pigeons coo on April 15 — to the warmth.
