April 16 is Nikita's Day. The merman has already woken up — he’s waiting for treats

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People believed that on April 16, after a long winter sleep, Vodyanoy wakes up. And he wakes up in a very bad mood! And the peasants did everything to appease the spirit of water. They brought him treats to the shore, asking him not to scare either adults or children, and also not to drive fish out of rivers and ponds.

There was even a rather cruel custom: a horse was given to the Vodyanoy. The animal was brought ashore and drowned. Along with the “drowned man,” they also sent edibles to the spirit: butter, bread, wine, chicken offal, wine and even tobacco. Therefore, how quickly the water calmed down was used to judge whether the spirit accepted the sacrifice. They were terribly afraid of Vodyanoy’s refusal of gifts. This literally meant: there will be no good fishing this coming summer.

The Church today honors the memory of St. Nikita the Confessor, who lived in the 8th century. He is famous for the fact that he stood firmly for the Orthodox confession.

Regarding weather signs:

  • Did the coltsfoot bloom on April 16th? Something bad will happen.
  • Long rumbles of thunder on this day mean bad weather for several days ahead.
  • Rain — late and stormy spring.
  • The wind blows from the south — to a good spring harvest. Blowing from the North? It will rain soon.
  • Lots of birch sap — summer will be rainy.
  • During the thunderstorm on April 16, the thunder is heard long-drawn out and not too sharply — the bad weather will continue in the near future.
Name days are celebrated today: Nikita, Martin, Feodosia.
