On April 19 they said: “If there is no wind on Eutychius, then early grain will be born abundantly, but windy Erema will knock down ears of grain.” In other words, the weather of that day was used to judge what the harvest of spring crops and vegetables, clover and bread would be like.
The Church today honors the memory of both Archbishop Eutychius of Constantinople and the martyr Jeremiah. The first, according to legend, lived in the 6th century. The Lord gifted him with the gift of prediction and the ability to cure serious illnesses. As for the martyr Jeremiah, all that is known about him is that he lived in the 3rd century in Palestine and sacredly believed in Jesus Christ. During the period of persecution of Christians, Jeremiah was martyred.
On April 19, it was customary to pray to Eutyches for the well-being and health of the family. And today the girls also wondered about their betrothed. There was a tradition associated with apple trees, which were in full bloom on these days: brides hurried to pick the flower and bring it to the temple faster than other girls. They believed that God would mark the first girl — she would definitely marry out of mutual love.
Such fortune-telling did not happen without reason: people compared the apple tree to a dressed-up young lady-bride. This tree was considered a symbol of fertility and love.
On the day of Eutyches and Erema (Jeremiah), the owners took care of the apple trees in their gardens: they whitened the trunks to protect them from harmful insects and propped up the branches with sticks, preparing for a rich harvest.
As for weather signs:
- Arriving ducks nest in places with plenty of water — in anticipation of the summer drought.
- On a windless and sunny day, spring crops will grow well.
- Fog in the morning means dry weather until the end of the month.
