April 23 – Terenty Marevny. Will it be a fertile year?
CrimeaPRESS reports:
April 23 was also popularly called Sunset Day. On this day, our ancestors tried to determine how fertile the year would be. They looked carefully to the East; if the sun was surrounded by haze, then one could hope for a good harvest. They said: “If the sun, in a foggy haze, will have a good harvest of grain this year, and if it rolls out from behind the mountains, like the palm of your hand, it will fall fiercely on the ground, then you will have to plow the land and sow it again.”
On April 23, the Church honors the memory of thirty-three martyrs who were tortured for their faith in the middle of the 3rd century, among whom were Pompius, Africana, and also Terentius, in whose honor this day is designated in the calendar.
As for the weather signs for this day:
- Young spiders have appeared — for warm days soon. If old spiders sit high on the web on April 23, then frosts are possible at night.
- After the haze, expect storms.
- The sun is shining and there is not a single cloud in the sky? It’s time to plow the winter field and sow it with spring crops.
- Hazel on April 23 is decorated with fluffy earrings — the ground will no longer freeze.
- In the morning there is fog opposite the sun — it will most likely rain during the day.
Name days are celebrated today: Alexander, Grigory, Dmitry, Maxim, Terenty, Fedor, Yakov.
And the Slavs in ancient times on April 23 asked God Yarila to protect their livestock from any predatory beast. Driving the cattle into the yard, turning to God Yarilo, they said: “You save the little cattle, Our little orphan, The whole little animal, In the field, and beyond the field, In the forest, and beyond the forest, In the forest behind the mountains, Behind the wide valleys, Give the cattle grass and water, And give the evil bear a stump and a log!” Early in the morning, after a long and cold winter, they walked around the courtyards before the ceremonial drive of the cattle to pasture — to Yarilin’s dew.
Before the cattle were driven out, they stroked them along the back with a boiled egg, painted yellow-green or red, which was then given to the shepherd. The cattle were driven out to pasture with a willow branch and fed with special bread — “byashka”.
