The day is named after St. Cyril, bishop of the city of Catania in Sicily, who lived at the turn of the 1st–2nd centuries.
Among the people, the date was slightly changed, putting a different meaning into these 24 hours: so April 3 became the day of Kirill Katanik, on which children said goodbye to the main winter fun — sledding. They were cleaned, put in order, dried and put away before the next cold weather. At the same time they said: “Even if you howl or scream, you won’t get a sled after Katanik.”
As for weather signs, then:
- Thunderstorm on April 3 – there will be a fruitful year.
- Abundant sap flow in birch trees means the summer will be stormy.
- The coltsfoot is blooming — soon it will become very warm.
- Mosquitoes appeared on April 3 – warmer weather.
- Blue clouds in the sky — it will be warm, but rainy.
- Yellow rays of the rising sun — the weather will be good.
- The tit began to sing on April 3 — a warm invitation.
AND! People believed: on April 3 you should not look at the night sky. If you see a shooting star, it’s bad luck.
Name days are celebrated: Vladimir, Kirill, Pakhom, Seraphim, Philemon, Thomas, Jacob.
And today our Slavic ancestors celebrated Vodopol. Sometimes this celebration was also called Pereplut, Vodyanoy’s Day or Vodyanoy’s name day, and sometimes Nikita Vodopol. But the meaning was the same — they celebrated the awakening of mermaids, Vodyanoy and all aquatic life from hibernation.
It was believed that during the long cold winter, Grandfather the Water One became hungry and weak, so on April 3, fishermen came to the shores and treated the spirit of water. Thus, they welcomed his awakening and cajoled him before the coming “water” season.
