April 6—Zakhar and Jacob's Day, Eve of the Annunciation
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The church honors the memory of Saints Zakhar and Jacob. This day was also called Artemy and Zechariah the Faster. At the same time, on April 6, people were actively preparing for the Feast of the Annunciation. They prayed in churches and visited prisons to distribute gifts to prisoners. Supper was obligatory.
And on this day they did a big cleaning of the house. Winter clothes and household utensils were necessarily fumigated with herbs. Juniper, in particular. They believed that such a measure would protect against the evil eye. Evil spirits were also driven away by burning old straw beds. In addition, to get rid of the undead, they burned fires and walked around huts in circles.
The weather signs for today are as follows:
- Isn’t it cold at night? Spring will be early.
- The snow melted for the Annunciation — there will be no more snowfalls this year.
- If it gets warmer outside, it means frosts, but they won’t last long, and summer will come soon.
