The church honors the memory of the Matrona of Solunskaya, who lived in the 3-4 centuries in Thessaloniki. The legend of her glorious life is as follows: the mistress of Matrona forced her to apostasy from the Christian faith, but the matron stood on her and secretly went to worship. When the lady found out about this, she ordered the Matron to be scored with sticks, and then she left to die in the house in one of the rings. By order of the hostess, the body of the Holy Martyr was thrown off the city wall. But the mistress’s life soon stopped after that — she stumbled, fell and crashed in the same place of the wall.
The people were also given other names from this day: Matrena is half a half, Matrena is a mentor, a half-off, Matrena-nast. In Rus’, the holy was revered by the patroness of respectable and diligent housewives. And women on April 9 actively prayed to her for the well -being, health and happiness of the family. Also on this day it was customary to restore order in all household chores. In particular, the peasants sorted out the turnips to take small root crops to the seeds, and overflow good and large specimens for better preservation of strips. Of the rotten and damaged reputies on the same day, dishes were prepared and eaten them with the whole family.
