April 9 is St. Matrona's Day. Don't quarrel, otherwise you may not make peace
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The church honors the memory of Matrona of Thessaloniki, who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries in Thessaloniki. The legend of her glorious life is this: Matrona’s mistress forced her to apostatize from the Christian faith, but Matrona stood her ground and secretly went to services. When the lady found out about this, she ordered Matrona to be beaten with sticks, and then she left her to die in one of the closets in the house. By order of the mistress, the body of the holy martyr was thrown from the city wall. But the life of the hostess soon stopped after that — she stumbled, fell and broke in the same place on the wall.
The people also gave this day other names: Matryona Half-Repnitsa, Matryona the Mentor, Half-Repnitsa, Matryona-Nastovitsa. In Rus’, the Saint was revered as the patroness of respectable and diligent housewives. And the women on April 9 actively prayed to her for the well-being, health and happiness of the family. Also on this day, it was customary to put all household affairs in order. In particular, peasants sorted turnips to select small root crops for seeds, and put good and large specimens into strips for better preservation. On the same day, dishes were prepared from rotten and damaged turnips and eaten by the whole family.
The weather on April 9 was also monitored, trying to predict its nature for the near future:
- Do lapwings call in the evening? The next day it will be clear. They scream low — to the summer drought.
- Frost and fog in the morning — the year will be very fruitful.
- Seagulls are flying over the house — the ice will melt in the near future.
- Lapwing flies low — there will be no precipitation for a long time.
Name days on April 9th are celebrated by: Alexander, Ivan, Pavel, Makar.
AND! Try not to quarrel with anyone today — it will be difficult to make peace later.
