Ascorbic acid or the whole truth about vitamin C

Ascorbic acid or the whole truth about vitamin C

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Recently I wrote a large detailed article about the benefits, forms and necessity of VITAMIN C in our body. Here I will explain briefly and talk about the best form of VITAMIN C.

Let’s figure out why VITAMIN C is so necessary

Vitamin C plays an important role as a cofactor for activating the 1st phase of liver detoxification, due to the quality of which all toxic metabolites are converted to a water-soluble form by cytochrome P450 enzymes.

Vitamin C also has the ability to neutralize superoxide radicals, converting them into hydrogen peroxide. It restores ubiquinone in mitochondria and promotes the absorption of vitamin E, all of which help reduce oxidative cell damage, preventing aging and deterioration of the body.

Vitamin C stimulates the synthesis of interferon, an activator of our immune defense. This increases the overall immune status of the body, and hence its protection from pathogenic load. At the same time, vitamin C does not stimulate the immune system, but gently helps the natural processes of immunomodulation.

In the gastric mucosa, vitamin C improves iron absorption by converting the iron ion Fe3+ into the form of iron required for hemoglobin synthesis — Fe2+.

In addition, vitamin C slows down the process of glycosylation of hemoglobin and reduces the rate of conversion of glucose to sorbitol.

How much VITAMIN C should you take per day?

  • for adults — 90-100 mg per day
  • Pregnant women are recommended to consume 10 mg more,
  • nursing — 30 mg more
  • for children — from 30 to 90 mg/day. depending on age.
  • For smokers and those who suffer from passive smoking, it is recommended to increase the daily intake of vitamin C by 35 mg/day.

The upper permissible level of consumption in Russia is 2000 mg/day, but only under the supervision of a specialist!

Now let’s look at the two forms of the vitamin. One of them is the familiar ascorbic acid, the other is ascorbate.

Ascorbic acid

The most popular and accessible type of vitamin C is ascorbic acid. However, despite its widespread use, this form can cause irritation of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity, as well as increase the load on the kidneys and genitourinary system if there is a predisposition to inflammation and the formation of oxalates in the urine.

Due to its acidic component, ascorbic acid is not an optimal and sometimes not safe choice in the following cases:

  • in the presence of gastritis, erosions and ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract, it causes irritation of the mucous membrane;
  • in case of inflammation of any mucous membranes, including the oral cavity, irritation of the mucous membranes also occurs;
  • with cystitis and kidney disease — it can increase oxalate levels.

Ascorbic acid is poorly absorbed by the body due to the same reasons. Therefore, just as you most likely will not eat lemons with a lip cracked from frost, you should not use ascorbic acid if you have irritated mucous membranes. Especially if taking ascorbic acid is accompanied by disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, a tendency to diarrhea — this indicates intolerance to the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract.

Mineral ascorbates

A combination of ascorbic acid with minerals (often calcium, sodium or magnesium).

Their advantage is that they have a less acidic composition, due to the content of alkaline minerals, and therefore almost do not cause irritation to the mucous membranes of the mouth, stomach and the entire gastrointestinal tract.

In addition, this form is better absorbed and enriches us with additional minerals.

Many sodium channels are found in the membrane of epithelial cells of the kidneys, lungs and intestines.

The intestine is the largest immune and lymphoid zone of the body, and it is on its enterocytes that most metabolic reactions in our body begin.

This is why oral intake of sodium ascorbate, vitamin C combined with the alkaline mineral sodium, works more effectively, safely and quickly than any of the other forms of vitamin C mentioned above.

The lungs and kidneys are two organs of detoxification (cleansing the body), and, of course, they will work especially intensively during illness. And, of course, they will also need support and help.

With the advent of a huge number of vitamins and dietary supplements, it becomes difficult to make the right choice. I advise you to be more attentive to your body and choose the form that will be safe and effective for you! Be healthy!
