At a new exhibition in Chersonesus — about the secrets of the Inkerman Valley

On February 29, the exhibition “Secrets of the Inkerman Valley” will open in the temporary exhibition hall of the Antique Exposition of the museum-reserve. Its visitors will be able to find out what mysteries one of the most picturesque places in the vicinity of modern Sevastopol holds, and see authentic archaeological finds, archival photographs and rare publications from the collection of the library of Chersonese Tauride.

The Inkerman Valley has a rich historical past. Rare printed publications from the library of the museum-reserve will help visitors immerse themselves in it. Guests will be presented with sketches of views of Inkerman and descriptions of ancient monuments made by travelers of the late 18th–19th centuries. Visitors will also be shown archival photographs and graphic materials made by participants in archaeological expeditions of the 1950s–1960s.

In addition, the new exhibition will feature authentic artifacts found by museum researchers during excavations in the Inkerman Valley. They will allow visitors to feel the connection of times and show the continuity of life in the region throughout different eras.

Among the finds are household items of the Kizil-Koba archaeological culture from the settlement of Uch-Bash, which existed from the second half of the 11th to the beginning of the 7th centuries. BC e. The material and spiritual culture of Antiquity is represented by materials from the Sovkhoz-10 burial ground, dating back to the first centuries AD. e. The ruins of the Kalamita fortress (second half of the 6th – 18th centuries) show the achievements of Byzantine and Turkish fortification, complemented by objects from the daily life of the garrison. Excavations of rural settlements of the Zagaitan Rock tell about the occupations of the inhabitants of the Inkerman Valley in the Middle Ages.

The architectural and landscape ensemble of Zagaitanskaya and Monastyrskaya rocks will allow visitors to the exhibition to get acquainted with the Christian antiquities of the region, where the undisputed dominant feature is the restored St. Clement Monastery.

From February 29 to April 14, we invite everyone to see unique artifacts of the distant past and reveal the secrets of the Inkerman Valley! Only in the temporary exhibition hall of the Antique Exposition of the museum-reserve. The exhibition “Secrets of the Inkerman Valley” will be open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00, admission is free— note the press service of the Tauride Chersonese Museum-Reserve.
