August 10 is the day of Saints Prokhor and Parmen. Do you know a blacksmith?

CrimeaPRESS reports:

August 10 is a special day. Blacksmiths were celebrated. And quite rightly so — people of this profession were the first assistants of peasants during field work. Blacksmiths were also credited with magical abilities — they literally subdued and tamed fire. There was also an opinion that they were sorcerers and knew otherworldly forces. Or even the Unclean One himself, as they said in the southern Russian regions. Therefore, blacksmiths have long been treated with honor. On Prokhor and Parmen, peasants went to visit them with abundant offerings.

In addition, it was believed that trade on August 10 would go very badly. Therefore, today, no fairs were usually held, no one went to the market. They said that everything that could be saved on this day would either break or get lost.

The Church today honors the memory of the disciples of Jesus Christ — 7 apostles, chosen from 70 disciples. According to the Holy Scripture, the 12 main apostles called all their disciples and instructed them to choose 7 people who could deal with everyday issues of the brotherhood, take care of creating comfort, and give alms to the poor. As a result of the general vote, Stephen, Nikanor, Philip, Prochorus, Timon, Parmen and Nicholas were elected. It is in honor of Prochorus and Parmen that the holiday of August 10 was established. It is known that Prochorus became Peter’s companion and much later took the post of Bishop of Nicomedia. He died a martyr’s death, having suffered for the faith during the persecutions organized in Antioch. Parmen carried out all the instructions of the apostles with particular zeal, but died before the disciples left Jerusalem. However, there is another legend according to which Parmen preached in Macedonia and died a martyr’s death during the persecutions organized by the Emperor Trajan.

Signs of the day:

  • If on this day you went into the forest to pick berries, the first glass you collect should be given into someone else’s hands – for a big harvest.
  • If you managed to collect a lot of berries, do not tell about the successful places of collection — the goblin will deceive. The same applies to mushrooms.
  • If a woman goes mushroom or berry picking, she should be in a good mood. She should also not be menstruating, otherwise she will return home with an empty basket.
  • You can’t exchange anything on this day. Otherwise, such a thing will spoil or disappear. For the same reason, you shouldn’t borrow or lend money, or go shopping.
  • A pear eaten on this day calms a restless and violent nature.
  • If you don’t know what decision to make, eat a pear at sunset, and the right decision will come to you in a dream.
  • If you hang a pear branch or a small pear wood figurine on your child’s crib on this night, it will enhance the child’s learning abilities.
  • Anyone who gets married on this day will not live long.

Today’s name days are celebrated by: Efim, Nikanor, Ivan, Prokhor, Nikolai, Vasily, Pavel, Julian, Sergey, Elena.
