August 11th — Kalinov Day. Witches walk at night

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Since August 11, people have noticed, the mornings become unseasonably cool. And on this day there were also fogs, so it was called Tumannik. On the horizon now there are lightning flashes — reflections of distant lightning. But, as a rule, thunderstorms quickly pass, and the nights from August 10 to 11 are unusually quiet and clear.

And by August 11, viburnum ripens. Ancestors considered this plant a symbol of immaculate beauty and purity of thoughts, and the bitterness of the berries was associated with the bitter fate of a girl who was married without love. Viburnum was usually used for medicinal purposes. It was known that this berry helps with nervous diseases, stomach diseases, increases blood clotting and strengthens the immune system. Also, on August 11, compotes, kissels and even marmalade with pastila were prepared from viburnum. Pies with viburnum filling were also baked.

Also on August 11, cows were protected from witches by locking the barns tightly at night. It was believed that witches came at night to milk the cows. From this procedure, the animals could lose weight or even die. In this case, they relied on various amulets: nettles, thistles, red silk ribbons, sunflowers.

The Church today honors the memory of Kalinnik of Cilicia, one of the holy martyrs who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries. It is known that it was his sermon that caused a storm of indignation among the pagans, who seized Kalinnik and took him to the hegemon Sacerdon for trial in the city of Ancyra. The hegemon sentenced Kalinnik to death. They shod him in iron boots covered with nails, after which they took him to the place of execution and burned him alive. However, when the fire was extinguished, they saw that Kalinnik was dead, but his body remained intact. After that, he was buried according to Christian custom.

Signs of the day:

  • If there are no frosts or viburnums on this day, the beginning of September will be warm and favorable for farming.
  • Fog in the morning means poor honey collection.
  • A foggy day means a good harvest of barley, oats and other grain crops.
  • Green oats mean a rainy autumn.
  • Frequent lightning in the sky means a good grain harvest.
  • Lots of nuts and berries mean a cold winter.
  • Few mushrooms – winter will be frosty and snowy.
  • Wash yourself with viburnum juice in the morning — you will be beautiful and fair-skinned until your wedding.
  • If you lean against the trunk of a viburnum tree growing in the yard, you can ensure your health and protect yourself from colds. But you should treat the tree itself with love and caution. In no case should you break branches or shake the crown too much. And God forbid — cut down the viburnum on this day! You will not see happiness and health for the rest of your life.
  • Those born on August 11 will grow up proud and resilient.
