August 13 – Evdokimovo fast. Dormition fast is coming soon
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The main thing that people celebrated on August 13 was that this day preceded the Dormition Fast, which began on August 14 and lasted until the 27th. This fast was strict, but not as hungry as, for example, the Great Fast. A new grain harvest, an abundance of fruits and vegetables, mushrooms, berries and nuts — the peasants did not get up from the table completely hungry. The main prohibitions were imposed on fun and entertainment. Therefore, on August 13, during Evdokimovo Lent, the youth had a great time — the boys and girls danced in circles, had fun, looked for grooms and brides. After all, Pokrov — the wedding season — was just around the corner! And those who were older looked over and repaired tools in order to then put them away until spring.
The Church now honors the memory of Eudocimus the Cappadocian, who lived in Asia Minor in the 9th century. From childhood, he was distinguished by obedience and righteousness. In his youth, he took a vow of celibacy. The virtuous life of Eudocimus was appreciated by the emperor, who appointed Eudocimus the ruler of the Kharsian region. It must be said that Eudocimus himself performed his duties conscientiously, tried to govern people fairly, cared for widows and orphans, and stood up for the offended. According to legend, the immaculate life of Eudocimus was pleasing to God, and he called him to heaven at the age of 33. After the death of the righteous man, various miracles began to occur at his tomb, in particular, the sick were healed. A few months later, when the tomb was opened, they discovered the incorruptible relics of the saint, which smelled sweet.
Signs of the day:
- Pre-dawn fog quickly dissipates? To clear, fine weather.
- Flying spider webs mean prolonged heat.
- Thick fog hangs over the forest – a sign of a good mushroom harvest.
- Many swallows flying around means autumn is coming soon.
