In Rus’, August 15 was associated with horses. After all, Stepan Senoval is their patron. There was a tradition of drinking animals consecrated by water on this day — before that it was necessary to load any silver object in it. They were sure that this would help to protect the “horses” from evil spirits and diseases. The custom of horses through a hat was also widespread, in which they later put a silver coin and hid in the stable (usually under the nursery). It was believed that this helps to make horses more flexible, and the cattle itself was not afraid of evil spirits. It is interesting that the coin used in the rite often passed from father to inheritance.
It was also a time of injection of grass, which has already grown. We tried to carry out work on August 15, including the shelter of hay from bad weather.
And in order to protect themselves from colds, awaiting people in the offseason, they practiced such a ceremony: the girls went out into the meadow and wreaths weaved from 12 different herbs. Then they were brought to the house and hung under the icons, in the red corner. It was believed that such a wreath had a protective and healing force.
The church now honors the memory of St. Stefan, the first martyr, who was an adherent of Christian teachings and came from the Jewish diaspora. According to legend, together with the six co -religionists, it was Stefan who was elected from the deacon apostles and was supposed to maintain order, justice among the population. However, it must be said that in addition to this, Stefan also preached faith in Christ in Jerusalem. Once in one of the synagogues, he argued about one of the speeches, as a result of which he was summoned to court. True, it is not known whether Stefan died as a result of the sentence, or he was scored with stones to death after his release — in any case, he died with a martyrdom. During the torment, he asked Jesus to take him to heaven and prayed for the pardon of the killers. By the way, on August 15, the transfer of the relics of the martyr Stefan from Jerusalem to Constantinople is noted.
