August 16 – Day of Isaac the Raspberry, Day of Anton Vikhrevey. We eat raspberries

CrimeaPRESS reports:

August 16 was called Malinnik for the simple reason that this was the time when raspberries ripened. And this berry was very much loved. Moreover, it was valued not only as a delicacy, but also for its healing properties. Raspberries were widely used to treat colds, nervous and other diseases. And, of course, they made jam, preserves, and baked pies with fillings from it.

And August 16 was also the day when brave people went to crossroads to «watch for whirlwinds.» When a whirlwind appeared, it was necessary to stick a knife into it, holding a rooster’s head in your hands. Then, according to signs, you can ask the wind what the winter will be like.

The Church now honors the memory of Anthony the Roman, who lived in the 11th-12th centuries. He was born into a family of Orthodox Romans, but became an orphan early and gave most of his inheritance to the poor. He threw the rest into the sea and took monastic vows. After the persecution of followers of the Orthodox faith began, Anthony’s monastery was destroyed, and he had to live for about a year inside a rock near the sea, where he spent his time thinking about God and praying. One day, Anthony was standing at the foot of the rock, and at some point a stone broke off under his feet. The saint miraculously fell into the sea with the stone and sailed on it through the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic, Lake Ladoga, the Neva and the Volkhov. Shortly before the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, Anthony found himself in the territory of Novgorod. Tradition says that at first Anthony did not understand anything that was said to him, but after praying he was able to pronounce Russian words. The local bishop Nikita encouraged Anthony to stay in Russia and found a monastery dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in honor of his miraculous salvation. Anthony spent part of his property, which he had previously thrown into the sea, to purchase lands — it was later caught by fishermen in Novgorod. Anthony ruled the monastery for about 16 years, and after his death, a monk named Andrei became his successor.

Signs of the day:

  • What the weather is like on this day is what October will be like.
  • If the wind blows strongly, it will be a snowy winter.
  • Whatever the weather is like on Anthony’s Day, so will be Isaac’s Day (December 19).
  • If the south wind blows, it means a frosty winter.
  • Meeting a bear in the forest on this day foretells happiness. If you manage to escape!
  • The wind knocks you off your feet — a frosty and snowy winter is coming.
  • Chickens and ducks are molting — cold weather will come soon.
  • Clouds are slowly floating across the sky – expect a strong wind!
  • You can’t start cleaning your house on this day. If your house is clean, your wallet will be clean (in the sense of «empty»)!
  • The rain has started — it will stop in seven weeks.
  • The clouds on the horizon stretched out in one line – towards the wind.
