Our ancestors believed that after the day of the prophet Elijah it was no longer possible to swim in bodies of water — summer was ending, it was getting colder, and autumn was just around the corner. They said: «On Elijah even a stone freezes.» They also believed that it was impossible to enter the water on August 2 — a drowned person would be found.

In addition, our ancestors believed that on August 2 all the reptiles and wild animals come out into the world, and therefore, they tried not to let the cattle out to pasture. There was a widespread sign according to which it was forbidden to let cats and dogs into the house — this could attract lightning, which the peasants were very afraid of.

As for the holy prophet Elijah. According to historical information, he lived in the 9th century BC and was known as a zealous Christian. During Elijah’s life, Israel was ruled by Ahab, whose wife allowed him to introduce paganism into the state. However, Elijah was able to stand up for the Jews who were not going to worship the pagan god Baal. The Lord endowed Elijah with the gift of miracles, which he used to convert people to the faith. Elijah could also send a punishment to the ruler for allowing idolatry to be introduced — it was a three-year famine. In addition, Elijah himself executed the pagan priests who had set up camp on Mount Carmel. The ruler’s wife, Jezebel, was very angry about this and swore that she would destroy Elijah. However, he managed to hide in the desert. Much later, Elijah returned to Israel again and continued to preach. It is known that it was the prophet Elijah who was taken alive to heaven — this is stated in the Bible. Thus, Elijah went to God on a fiery chariot, after which he began to be called nothing less than the thunderer. On the day of his memory, a religious procession was held and people prayed for rain or clear weather.
