August 23 – Lawrence Day. Wash yourself with spring water

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People called this day — Vodokolebatel. By observing rivers and lakes, they tried to determine what the weather would be like in winter and autumn. This day was also called «Zorechnik» because of the scarlet evening and morning dawns. In the evening, the rivers finally cool down, the water in them becomes even colder. Even just entering the river is fraught with a serious cold, not to mention swimming.

But! Young girls loved this day. From early morning they ran to the nearest spring. They believed that if you wash yourself with spring water before noon, you will be beautiful and healthy until the next Laurentian Day!

On August 23, the Church honors the memory of Laurentius of Rome, who lived in the 3rd century and served as an archdeacon in the Roman Christian community. According to legend, Laurentius came from the city of Osca, which was previously located in the territory of modern Spain. His teacher was Archdeacon Sixtus. After Sixtus was appointed Bishop of Rome, Laurentius was ordained a deacon. He was instructed to look after the property of the church and also to care for the poor. Unfortunately, Laurentius suffered greatly during the persecution organized against Christians by Emperor Valerian. At that time, many priests were executed, and Christians were expelled from the cities. Sixtus, who had recently said goodbye to Laurentius and said that the same fate awaited him soon, was also sentenced to death. He also ordered his student to distribute all the church wealth to the poor. As soon as Laurentiy did this, he was almost immediately seized and sent to prison. In prison, Laurentiy performed miracles, in particular, healing the sick. Thanks to this, Laurentiy was able to convert many to his faith. Then he was summoned to court, where he was ordered to give all the church treasures to the state. Laurentiy asked to be released for this for three days, and during this time he distributed the remaining goods to the needy, and then came to the emperor with a crowd of beggars and said: «Here are the real treasures of the temple.» The emperor was very angry and ordered that Laurentiy be tortured.

On this day, people prayed to Saint Lawrence for the strengthening of their eyesight and the healing of eye diseases. According to legend, this saint had the ability to cure blindness. They also prayed to him for the expulsion of demons, as well as for deliverance from the evil eye — the bad influence of evil people, which spoils health and worsens mood.

And from this day on, the weather determines the entire autumn. If it suddenly starts raining, it will last until the first frosts! And sunny weather foreshadowed mild weather and a long Indian summer.

Signs of the day:

  • There are no waves on the water, and the boats near the shore do not rock — autumn will be quiet and calm, and winter will be mild.
  • Waves on the water at midday mean a harsh winter and cold autumn.
  • The weather on Lavrentiya is what it will be like all autumn.
  • Rain on Laurentia means a rainy but warm autumn.
  • Quiet waters mean good fishing in August and September.
  • Small ripples on the water – August and September will be windy and rainy.
  • New moon means warmth.
  • If you wash yourself with water from a spring before noon, you will become even more beautiful!
  • Lots of acorns on the oak tree – next year promises to be fruitful!
  • If the birds don’t sing, it’s going to rain.
