August 23 — Lawrence Day. Wash yourself with spring water!

CrimeaPRESS reports:

This day was popularly called the Water Shaker. Watching the rivers and lakes, they tried to determine what the weather would be like in winter and autumn. This day was also called «Zorechnik» because of the scarlet evening and morning dawns. In the evening, the rivers finally cool down, the water in them becomes even colder. Even just entering the river is fraught with a serious cold, not to mention swimming.

But! Young girls loved this day. From early morning they ran to the nearest spring. They believed that if you wash yourself with spring water before noon, you will be beautiful and healthy until the next Laurentian day!

On August 23, the Church honors the memory of Lawrence of Rome, who lived in the 3rd century and served as an archdeacon in the Roman Christian community. According to legend, Lawrence came from the city of Osca, which was previously located on the territory of modern Spain. His teacher was Archdeacon Sixtus. After Sixtus was appointed bishop of Rome, Lawrence was ordained a deacon. He was charged with looking after the property of the church, as well as taking care of the poor. Unfortunately, Lawrence suffered greatly during the persecution organized against Christians by Emperor Valerian. Then many priests were executed, and Christians were expelled from the cities. Sixtus was also sentenced to death, who shortly before that moment had managed to say goodbye to Lawrence and say that the same fate awaited him soon. He also ordered his disciple to distribute all the riches of the church to the poor. As soon as Lavrenty did this, he was almost immediately seized and sent to prison. In prison, Lawrence performed miracles, in particular, healing the sick. Thanks to this, Lavrenty was able to convert many to his faith. Then he was summoned to court, where he was ordered to give the state all the church treasures. Lawrence asked to be released for this for three days, and during this time he distributed the remaining good to those in need, and then appeared to the emperor with a crowd of beggars and said: «Here, the real treasures of the temple.» The emperor became very angry and ordered Lawrence to be tortured.

They prayed to St. Lawrence on this day for the strengthening of vision, the healing of eye diseases. After all, according to legend, this saint had the ability to cure blindness. They also prayed to him for the expulsion of demons, as well as for deliverance from the evil eye — the evil influence of evil people, from which health deteriorates and mood worsens.

And from that day on, the weather determines the whole autumn. If it suddenly starts to rain — be it until the first frost! Well, sunny weather foreshadowed mild weather and a long Indian summer.

Notes of the day:

  • There are no waves on the water, and the boats do not sway near the shore — the autumn will be quiet and calm, and the winter will be mild.
  • Waves on the water at noon — to a harsh winter and cold autumn.
  • What is the weather like in Lavrentiya — this will be the whole autumn.
  • Rain on Lawrence — to a rainy but warm autumn.
  • Calm waters mean good fishing in August and September.
  • Small ripples on the water — August and September will be windy and rainy.
  • New Moon — warm.
  • If you wash yourself with water from a spring before noon, you will become even more beautiful!
  • A lot of acorns on oak — next year promises to be fruitful!
  • Birds do not sing — to the rain.
  • Fish at sunset do not splash their tail — the next day will be rainy.
  • Hoarfrost in the morning — to an early and cold winter.
  • Linden leaves turn yellow from below — to a good harvest of winter crops.

Name days are celebrated today: Roman, Vyacheslav, Athanasius.
