August 24 — Eupla Day. Ghosts roam the cemeteries and swamps

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The people noticed that from August 24, leaves begin to crumble from the trees. AND! Our ancestors considered this day to be quite scary — they believed that ghosts were walking around the cemeteries. Wandering lights light up on graveyards and swamps. There is an opinion that it is the souls of drowned men, hangmen and people who died an unnatural death that go free. Like, they are not allowed into heaven or hell, so they wander among people, restless! Especially bitter drunkards get from them. After the third glass, they can appear with their own eyes and scare. That is why it has long been forbidden to drink alcohol on this day. It was also not supposed to go fishing — drowned people could be dragged into the water.

And the people also believed that today a horse is galloping through the swamps, which is trying to find its rider, who died and fell out of the saddle. With the onset of darkness, the horse comes to the cemetery and begins to cry plaintively — that is why on August 24 you can hear howling and groaning outside the window. Some daredevils tried to catch the horse, but they could not do it. The legend says that in those places where such a white horse appears, there were earlier battles. Many, by the way, believed that horses are the wandering souls of their ancestors.

On August 24, the church honors the memory of the martyr Euplas, who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries. He served in the city of Catana (Sicily) as an archdeacon. He became famous for carrying the Gospel with him and at every opportunity he tried to deliver a sermon. On one of these days Euplas was seized by the pagans and taken to the emperor. They subjected him to numerous tortures, but he still did not agree to accept the pagan faith. During the execution, Euples continued to preach — and with that he died.
