August 25 is the day of Photius and Anikita. Guests come to the brownies
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The people noted: the first frosts are possible on Photius. And autumn is already felt in the air: the trees are starting to lose their leaves, and many migratory birds are already preparing to go to warmer climes.
And there was also a belief that on August 25, the brownie especially loves to play pranks in the attic. You can hear extraneous sounds: knocking, creaking, animal cries and even human voices. They said that the house spirit on Photius and Anikita receives guests — other brownies from neighboring estates, and even friends from distant lands! They tried not to disturb the noisy company — few people wanted to meet face to face with otherworldly creatures!
On August 25, the Church honors the memory of the martyrs Photius and Anikita, who respectively were each other’s nephew and uncle. Anikita during the reign of Emperor Diocletian served as a military dignitary in Nicodemia (approximately III-IV centuries). Once Anikita opposed the emperor when he placed the weapons of execution in the city square to intimidate supporters of the Christian faith. The emperor was so angry that he ordered Anikita to be subjected to various torments. Then he was thrown to be eaten by wild lions, but even after that Anikita remained alive and unharmed. Anikita went through many tortures, but the Lord left him in good health. At the same time, Photius appeared to the emperor and demanded that Anikita be released, for which he was also tortured. Both were placed in a dungeon, and then sentenced to be burned in a furnace. The martyrs independently went into the blazing flame and for many became the sign that made it possible to convert to the Christian faith. Interestingly, according to legend, the bodies of the martyrs were not struck by fire even after death. That is why many pagans who were present at the execution believed in God.
