August 26 — Day of Tikhon Zadonsky. We speak grain

August 26, which was customary to spend in labor and care. Peasants cleaned their bins — places to store new crops and supplies for the winter. On this day, grain and homemade preparations were spoken, protecting them from the evil, envious eye.

The Church now honors the memory of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk and the icon of the Mother of God «Softener of Evil Hearts». They are prayed for deliverance from the mortal sin of despondency, protection from unkind people and for the strengthening of faith.

Sometimes the icon «Softener of Evil Hearts» is called «Passionate», as it depicts objects associated with the passions of Christ: a cross, a sponge and a spear. It is also called «Seven Arrows», due to the fact that the Mother of God, depicted on the icon, is pierced by seven arrows. These arrows symbolize the grief of the Mother of God for the Son, given to death in the name of the salvation of mankind. With this icon in the old days they went around the house and yard, protecting the dwelling from the evil eye. The icon «Softener of Evil Hearts» is miraculous. According to believers, she is able to heal bodily and mental ailments and inspire hope for the best. In 1830, this icon stopped the cholera epidemic in Vologda, thanks to the sincere prayers of ordinary people.
